Secretary of State Rex Tillerson turned down yesterday's rhetoric from Donald Trump that threats from North Korea would be “met with fire and fury like the world has never seen” but backed up the president.
Said Tillerson: “I think what the president was doing was sending a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jung Un would understand because he doesn't seem to understand diplomatic language…The President just wanted to be clear to the North Korean regime that the U.S. has an unquestionable ability to defend itself, will defend itself and its allies, and I think it was important that he deliver that message to avoid any miscalculation on their part.”
Added Tillerson: “I think Americans should sleep well at night. I have no concerns about this particular rhetoric over the last few days.”
Tillerson spoke to reporters on a flight between Malaysia and Washington D.C. while headed to Guam to refuel.
Guam's Governor Eddie Calvo released a YouTube message on Wednesday morning reassuring the territory's residents that the threat level to Guam had not changed following an announcement from North Korea that it was exploring the possibility of sending missiles there.
